A woman in New Jersey is facing charges for allegedly using a family member’s name to write prescriptions for patients while reportedly practicing medicine without a license.
Between March 2022 and June 2023, a 62-year-old woman from Toms River, New Jersey, was reportedly working as a physician out of an office at Shore Medical Associates in Ocean County.
According to reports, the woman was not legally licensed to practice medicine, but she allegedly did so during her time at Shores Medical. She was reportedly using the name and valid medical license number of one of her relatives so she could treat patients and write prescriptions during her time at the facility.
Agents from the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Toms River Township Police Department, and the economic crimes unit of the prosecutor’s office worked together to investigate the situation. According to a press release from the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, they believe the woman “was prescribing medications, including controlled dangerous substances, to patients.” Upon further investigation, they allegedly found that in addition to practicing medicine, the woman was filing claims and billing insurance companies.
On July 25, the woman was taken into custody and booked into the Ocean County Department of Corrections facility. It was reported that the prosecution is seeking charges against her for practicing medicine by an unlicensed person, forgery, health care claims fraud, and distribution of a controlled dangerous substance. She was incarcerated while she waited for her detention hearing.
According to jail records, the woman is no longer in custody.
The investigation is ongoing, and the authorities are searching for others that may have been given medical treatment or prescription medication from the suspect.
