On the afternoon of May 29, a boy in foster care was allegedly kidnapped from his elementary school by his biological mother when she left the campus with him against a court order prohibiting her from doing so.
Dylan Kostenko, an 8-year-old student at Towne Elementary School in Carson, lives in foster care since he was removed from his mother’s custody in May 2017.
Dylan’s biological mother, 29-year-old Dariia Kostenko, was granted monitored visits with her son, but she does not have permission to retrieve him from school.
When Dylan’s foster mother arrived at the school to bring the boy home she was informed by the employees that he had already left the premises with his birth mother.
In a video captured by a security camera in a suburban area, a woman fitting the description of Kostenko was seen walking past with a young boy.
Authorities continued trying to locate the child, but on Thursday morning, Kostenko’s boyfriend arrived at the Inglewood Police Department with Dylan and turned the boy over to their custody.
Police found Kostenko near the station two hours after Dylan was brought in, and she and her boyfriend were taken into custody and booked at the Carson Sheriff’s Station.
Kostenko is facing charges of kidnapping and child abduction and she is being held in lieu of $150,000 bond. Her boyfriend is also being charged on suspicion of child abduction.
