DUI Suspect Accused of Attacking Healthcare Workers

A West Virginia man was accused of attacking healthcare workers after he was arrested following a crash that injured a woman.

The man was taken to Ruby Memorial Hospital for medical care after his arrest. Deputies said he became violent while workers were treating him. One worker was allegedly bitten and injured during the incident. Deputies also reported seeing the man strike another worker with his head. They said he went after additional workers and later threatened one of them with serious violence.

The hospital confrontation followed a crash in Monongalia. A woman had been inside a vehicle that overturned and needed help getting out. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The man told deputies that he was not driving when the wreck occurred. Investigators received different information from him about his position inside the vehicle from witnesses. The people, who arrived soon after the crash, reportedly told deputies that the man was the person they saw leaving the vehicle from the driver’s side.

Deputies also suspected that the man had been driving while impaired. They reported seeing several indications that he was under the influence and said they found drug paraphernalia on him. He performed field sobriety tests, which deputies said provided additional indications of impairment.

A check of his driving history brought up more information, and deputies said his license had previously been suspended or revoked because of a DUI. They also found multiple earlier DUI convictions.

The two incidents resulted in separate allegations that were included in criminal complaints filed against him. The man was charged with DUI with injury, two counts of battery on a healthcare worker and one count of assault on a healthcare worker. He was being held in the North Central Regional Jail.
