DUI Suspect Caught with Beer in Police Car

An Indiana man accused of driving with over triple the legal blood-alcohol level was arrested after allegedly failing to stop when he crashed into several parked vehicles.

On the afternoon of December 29, a 22-year-old man from South Bend was driving locally when he reportedly crashed into the front of a woman’s parked car. She heard a collision, and when she walked outside to check it out, she said she noticed what appeared to be white paint on the damaged body. The offending driver was no longer present, and the authorities were notified.

Officers from the South Bend Police Department spoke to the alleged victim and then headed to a second reported crash scene a couple of blocks away. The police were told someone driving a white Dodge was at fault for the collisions, and the suspect was still at the scene. When they approached the vehicle, the man was sitting in the driver’s seat. According to reports, he looked and acted like he was intoxicated, and the police said they smelled alcohol when they were talking to him. When they administered a breath test, the results indicated that the man, who reportedly said he was at a party earlier in the day, had a .245 BAC.

The suspect was taken into custody, and while in the police vehicle, and it was reported that he brought four unopened beer cans with him. He was booked into the St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated – first offense, operating a motor vehicle without ever receiving a driver’s license, leaving the scene of a crash, and operating a vehicle with an alcohol concentration equivalent to .15 or more. He was released on a $500 cash bond the following day.
