DUI Suspect Flees Leading Police to Watery Finale

A resident of a Dallas suburb of Arlington, Texas, got the attention of a policeman patrolling in his neighborhood and reported a man driving an SUV had crashed into his car a couple of times. He also told the officer that he got the impression that the man was intoxicated.

40-year-old Daniel Basham, the suspect, was still in the area when the officer located him and attempted to get him to pull over. Basham continued driving on the city streets and led pursuing police to the shore of Lake Arlington where he drove directly into the body of water. He exited the immersed vehicle and instead of surrendering he allegedly attempted to swim to the Fort Worth area on the opposite side of the lake.

Basham tired out from swimming and returned to the nearby dock where officers took him into custody, and his SUV was hoisted from the water. A statement released by Arlington police reported that officers found narcotics in the vehicle.

Basham was transported to a local hospital and given a preventative examination, and doctors found he did not appear to suffer from any serious injuries.

Basham is facing charges of driving while intoxicated, evading arrest and detention in a vehicle, and possession of a controlled substance.
