DUI Suspect Tried to Hold Officer’s Hand During Arrest

A Florida man suspected of driving while intoxicated is facing charges after he allegedly told the police he drank several beers before getting behind the wheel.

Late in the evening on January 1, a 60-year-old man from Eustice was driving his Chevrolet Traverse locally when he was pulled over for allegedly failing to leave enough space between his truck and the vehicle in front of him. It was believed that he might be intoxicated, and an officer from the Florida Highway Patrol headed to the scene to assist.

When he arrived and interacted with the driver, who was reportedly slurring his words, he reported that he also smelled alcohol, which gave him the impression that the man had been drinking. He asked the man for his driver’s license, and things reportedly took an unusual turn. According to reports, instead of giving him the card, the man reached out and requested that the officer hold his hand. The driver also said he was not sure why he was pulled over. The officer asked whether the man had anything to drink before driving, and he allegedly said he had a few beers six to seven hours prior to getting in the vehicle.

While being taken into custody, the suspect reportedly became upset and started to cry. It was reported that he told the officers he was sorry and said that he knew he shouldn’t have driven the truck. The man was transported to the Laken County Jail on suspicion of DUI – second offense. He reportedly consented to taking a breath test, which showed results of 0.226 and 0.221 BAC. The man was released from custody after posting a $2,000 bond.
