Around 10:30 PM on August 3, a 24-year-old man who lives in Kansas was at the Sidelines Sports Pub and Grill in Janesville. When he left the establishment and reportedly got into his vehicle to drive away, he put the car in reverse and accelerated into a boulder while several people were watching.
After the crash, the driver allegedly grabbed a backpack out of his vehicle and sprinted into a field nearby.
Officers, including a K9, went to Sidelines to investigate the situation. They talked to the people who said they watched the incident as it occurred. They were reportedly told that when the man came out of the woods and went back to his car, he did not have the backpack with him.
The field was searched, and when the officers found a backpack, they reported that a stolen gun was inside. They also claimed they found proof that the bag belonged to the suspect.
The man was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment of his wounds incurred in the crash.
After he was released, the man was booked into the Rock County Jail. He is facing charges of first offense operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, felon in possession of a firearm, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, and resisting an officer. It was reported that since he resides in another state, he is considered a flight risk, so he was ordered to be held in lieu of a $5,000 cash bond.
