Infant Injured in High-Speed Crash Caused by Drunk Driver

When an allegedly intoxicated driver reportedly going over 100 MPH caused a crash involving three automobiles, two people including an infant suffered from injuries.

Around 8:30 pm on January 19, a car accident with three automobiles took place on an Irwindale onramp to the 605 freeway.

When officers with the Irwindale Police Department accompanied by the Los Angeles County Fire Department went to the site of the accident, they found that one of the cars had flipped over. The inhabitants of all of the vehicles were still at the scene, and at least two of them, one of them an infant, had sustained injuries.

Emergency Medical Technicians tended to the wounds, and then took the victims to the hospital for further treatment and evaluation.

Officers spoke with people who said they had seen the accident when it took place, and several of them gave statements reporting that they believed the driver accused of causing the wreck was traveling at a speed of at least 100 MPH when the vehicles made contact.

The police identified the person they believed was responsible as Baldwin Park resident Eric Vargas.

When interacting with Vargas it was further purported that he had consumed alcohol and then operated his vehicle, which has been assumed to be the cause of the incident.

Vargas was placed under arrest, but before he was taken to jail the man was first taken to the hospital to make sure he hadn’t sustained any injuries needing medical intervention.

After he was released from the hospital, Vargas was booked into the West Covina City Jail around 1:00 am for suspicion of felony DUI. He was released from custody later that afternoon on a $100,000 bond.
