Man Shot When Friend Used Gun Laser Sight as Cat Toy

A man’s friend reportedly shot him in the leg while using the laser sight on his handgun as a toy, resulting in both of them being arrested.

19-year-old Jashanti Pleasant is from Kenosha, Wisconsin.

On August 10, Pleasant was reportedly hanging out with a couple of people.

According to the criminal complaint, after allegedly having “several shots of “E&J” alcohol within an hour,” Pleasant began to play with the cat in the home.

The woman reportedly got her hands on a 9mm handgun that was sitting on the dresser.

In an alleged effort to create a makeshift interactive pet toy, Pleasant activated the laser sight on the weapon. She reportedly began moving the light around to try to engage the feline.

The owner of the weapon was standing in the doorway to the room. The gun went off, and he was hit in the leg by a bullet.

A woman who lives in the same apartment complex was a part of the social gathering. She reported that she witnessed the incident.

The man, identified as 21-year-old James Daniels, went to the neighbor’s apartment to try to tend to his wound.

The authorities were informed that a shooting had taken place, and officers went to the address.

One of the officers found Daniels in the neighbor’s dwelling. It was confirmed that he had a wound on his leg indicative of a gunshot.

The officer instructed Daniels to lay on the ground. When the paramedics arrived, the injured man was taken to a local hospital.

When they talked to Pleasant, she reportedly said Daniels gave her permission to handle the weapon. She said she didn’t think it was loaded. She also reported that she apologized to Daniels for the mishap, and he accepted her expression of regret.

Pleasant was taken into custody. She is facing charges for causing injury by the negligent use of a weapon.

Daniels is facing felony criminal charges in a separate case involving a shooting. Upon his release, he was forbidden from possessing a gun. When the police learned that Daniels was out on bond and prohibited from having firearms, he was charged with a felony for possessing a weapon.
