A man who was initially accused of assault and domestic assault after reportedly consuming a THC beverage and allegedly trying to drown his mother and sister is now facing more serious charges after the prosecutor reviewed the details of the case.
On the afternoon of August 30, a 42-year-old man from Shakopee, Minnesota, was swimming in Otter Tail Lake with two of his family members. Something occurred that upset the man, and it was reported that he physically lashed out at his 25-year-old sister and 64-year-old mom. According to reports, he first reached out and put his hand around his sister’s throat. While she was under the water, he allegedly choked her, causing her to pass out. When their mother tried to force her son to let go, he reportedly attempted to push her underwater as well.
A neighbor overheard odd sounds coming from the lake, and when he spotted the family, he ran over to help. Both women were safely retrieved from the water, and the authorities were notified. When deputies arrived, the man was still in the water, and when he got out, he was taken into custody without incident. They reported that he was very concerned that he might have killed his sister and appeared very relieved to learn it was not so. He allegedly told them he drank a beverage containing THC before the incident occurred.
He was booked into the Otter Tail County Jail, where he is facing charges of one felony count of second-degree attempted murder, two felony counts of domestic assault by strangulation, and one misdemeanor count of domestic assault causing fear. According to online records, he was released after posting bond a few days later. If the suspect is convicted of the charges, he could spend over 20 years in prison, in addition to having to pay fines.
Both alleged victims were treated for non-life-threatening injuries, but the suspect’s sister was taken to the hospital for treatment.
