Minnesota Grandfather Accused of Shooting Grandson

A Minnesota man was accused of shooting his teenage grandson after an argument.

The incident reportedly happened on May 3 at a residence in Crow Wing County. Deputies responded after receiving a report of a shooting, but were informed that the alleged victims had already fled the property and gone to a nearby store for help. When deputies arrived, they located an 18-year-old man suffering from injuries to his back that were reportedly consistent with birdshot wounds.

According to court documents, the teenager’s mother told investigators that her father had shot her son following a dispute connected to a household chore involving a fish house. Family members reportedly told investigators that the older man had become upset because the teenager had not stored the structure properly.

The complaint stated that the argument had escalated earlier in the day when the two allegedly exchanged insults and became physical. The older man allegedly struck the teenager in the mouth, and the teenager reportedly hit him back during the confrontation. Authorities said the suspect also allegedly threatened to shoot the teen’s dog during the dispute.

After the argument, the teenager reportedly left the home with his brother to go fishing. Investigators said the suspect later spent hours drinking heavily and allegedly made repeated threats about shooting the teenager before he returned home later that evening.

According to the authorities, the teenager arrived back at the residence around 9 p.m. Shortly afterward, his mother reportedly heard a gunshot and breaking glass before hearing her son scream. She told investigators she then saw the suspect sitting on a bed while allegedly holding a shotgun.

The complaint stated that the suspect also allegedly threatened the woman before she fled the residence with her injured son.

The 72-year-old man was later taken into custody and charged with attempted murder, multiple assault charges, and reckless disregard. He remained jailed on bond following the incident.
