A mother of two in Indiana is facing several charges after allegedly leaving her two babies at home alone for 14 hours when she went out to drink at a bar.
Just after midnight on March 12, a woman from Muncie with a one-year-old and a one-week-old reportedly decided to go out drinking. Before making her way to the bar, she reportedly consumed a six-pack of 16 oz. beers. When she headed out the door, she allegedly left the babies by themselves. A few hours later, the authorities received a report about an accident involving a car that crashed into a pole. When the police arrived, they found that a woman who would later be identified as the mother of the children was the driver of the vehicle.
While interacting with her, the police believed she was intoxicated. They also asked her if she had children when they saw a child safety seat in the back of her car, but she reportedly declined to tell them about her youngsters. Coincidentally, around 2:30 PM, they received a call from a concerned citizen who reported they heard babies crying inside a home. They provided the police with an address, and they learned that the woman arrested at the scene of the accident was their mother.
The children were taken to the hospital, and it was reported that the one-year-old was in good physical health, but the newborn was malnourished.
The 32-year-old woman is being held in the Delaware County Jail in lieu of a $42,500 bond. She is facing multiple preliminary charges, including two counts of level 6 felony neglect of a dependent, and one count each of level 6 felony obstruction of justice, level 5 felony neglect of a dependent (abandonment), and level 3 felony neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury.
