39-year-old Jared Brossett has been on the New Orleans City Council for 7 years. He is currently running for a seat in the upcoming election.
Last year, Brossett was in a car accident that resulted in a DUI charge. He was permitted to enter a diversion agreement instead of being criminally prosecuted, and he went to rehab.
Around 2:30 am on October 18, Brossett was reportedly in the driver’s seat of his car outside the Brother’s Express Food Mart with the engine running.
When a New Orleans Police Department officer was driving past, a person at the location flagged them down and asked them to check on Brossett.
The police reported that when they peered into his car, Brossett appeared to be asleep. They purported that he had passed out because he was drunk.
The officers reported that they were forced to take Brossett out of the vehicle, and when they got close to him, he allegedly smelled like he had been drinking alcohol.
When they tried to administer field sobriety tests, Brossett reportedly would not comply.
Brossett, who was also accused of driving under the influence in Florida in 2006, was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI. He was held on a $3,500 bond and later released from incarceration.
The City Council President and Vice President released a statement and reported that they are saddened by the news of Brossett’s arrest. They believe that “alcoholism is a disease and should be treated as such.”
