A man in Indiana turned himself in after he reportedly set fire to his home with the alleged intent of using the insurance money to help lighten his distress over his burdensome financial load.
Currently, many people are finding it increasingly difficult to make ends meet, and for some, the state of affairs has caused a great deal of stress and anxiety. It was reported that a 29-year-old man from Winchester, a town located about 70 miles from Indianapolis, which approximately 5,000 people call home, was greatly affected by his financial situation, which had been going on for years. He reportedly tried to overcome it using a method he had allegedly tried before, but this time it led to criminal charges.
On his way out the door for work on September 25, the man, who was reportedly experiencing mounting pressure from credit card debt, tried to set the laundry room in his house on fire with the alleged hope that it would burn down the dwelling. According to reports, he intended to collect the insurance money and use it to handle the bills. When the insurance company learned about the fire, they began investigating. Approximately one month later, the man went to the Winchester Police Department and said he wanted to turn himself in. He talked to the authorities about the situation, and it was reported that he told them about his previous attempt, but said it failed because the insurance company did not follow through with an investigation. Additionally, he reportedly wrote a statement that said he had set the fire.
