Two Men Accused of Stealing $90K in Baseball Memorabilia

Two men in Arizona were accused of taking more than $90,000 in property from a storage facility, including baseball equipment belonging to former Major League Baseball player Daniel Johnson.

According to reports, police found some of the missing belongings at a home connected to the investigation. Some of the items that were taken were things Johnson had collected throughout his professional baseball career. He played for Cleveland, Baltimore, San Francisco and Houston, and his stored belongings included gear from multiple teams. The collection had taken about 10 years to build, and he did not know whether all of it could be replaced.

According to reports, Johnson and his fiancée had moved their belongings into storage while work was being done on their home. Along with the baseball memorabilia, the missing property included clothing, purses and computers. Police identified items such as batting gloves, hats, jackets, shorts, shirts and hoodies among the stolen belongings.

The break-in occurred on September 27 at a storage facility in Phoenix, Arizona, and investigators believe the men entered more than one unit. Police said the activity appeared to involve breaking the locks and entering storage spaces.

The suspects were reportedly seen by a pawn shop employee who recognized two men pictured on a police flier and contacted the authorities. Police obtained a warrant to search a home associated with the suspects, and officers located shoes, computers and baseball equipment identified as Johnson’s, including gear marked with his name and number.

Both men were taken into custody on October 9. They are each accused of taking property from the facility and trying to sell stolen items. The authorities also indicated that other storage units had been entered.
