Utah Man Accused of Torturing Kids Over Candy

A Utah man was reportedly accused of abusing two young children in his home after authorities said a boy was hospitalized with hypothermia and widespread injuries.

According to court records, the case came to light after the child was taken for medical care, where staff allegedly observed bruising across much of his body. The injuries, along with signs that he may have been restrained, raised concerns and led the authorities to open an investigation on April 22.

During that investigation, the man was questioned and allegedly described a system of punishments he said he created. He reportedly told the authorities that the children would be forced to perform exercises such as squats, planks, and wall sits when they got in trouble. He allegedly said the discipline was often used when the children took candy or other treats without permission.

The children, ages 6 and 3, were also reportedly made to practice martial arts techniques on each other. Investigators said the older child claimed she was instructed to perform moves on her younger brother, and the boy would allegedly be punished further if he cried.

In another account, the older child reportedly said her brother’s mouth was once taped shut while he was forced to exercise. The incident was allegedly linked to his sneaking food at night. Authorities also stated that food in the home was reportedly kept locked.

The children initially claimed their injuries came from training, but investigators said they did not believe that explanation. One child reportedly told the authorities that their mother would put on headphones during some incidents, and that this was when the boy was allegedly placed in cold water.

The man later faced multiple charges, including aggravated child abuse, child torture, kidnapping, reckless endangerment, domestic violence in the presence of a child, and unlawful detention of a minor.
