Woman Accused of DUI After Police Pursuit

A Maryland woman was charged with multiple offenses after the authorities investigated a high-speed chase that ended when a vehicle became disabled near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge.

According to the authorities, the aftermath of the incident caused traffic delays as crews removed the damaged vehicle and cleaned up fluids that had leaked onto the roadway after the crash. Investigators said the pursuit came to an end when the vehicle struck traffic cones and two guardrails before spinning around and becoming inoperable.

After taking the driver into custody, the authorities charged her with driving under the influence, driving while impaired, attempting to elude police, reckless and negligent driving, leaving the scene of a property-damage crash, and several additional traffic violations. Officials later released her to a sober party.

The investigation began during the early evening of June 28 when a deputy was responding to an unrelated call for service. According to investigators, a speeding vehicle allegedly crossed the center line and nearly collided head-on with the patrol vehicle. The deputy avoided the crash, turned around, and began following the vehicle.

The authorities said the driver allegedly left the roadway, crashed into a ditch and a nearby field, then returned to the road before continuing to flee. Investigators said the vehicle reportedly traveled the wrong direction for a short distance before entering a nearby highway.

According to the authorities, the pursuit continued as the vehicle allegedly weaved across multiple lanes, struck a concrete barrier, and reached speeds of about 100 mph.

Deputies allegedly found multiple alcoholic beverages inside the vehicle and observed signs of impairment. Investigators reported that the driver declined standardized field sobriety tests but later submitted to a breath test. The results allegedly showed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.22.
