A Canadian man was sentenced after a California jury found him guilty of attempting to kill a woman he had met through an online gaming platform and her boyfriend during a planned attack in 2024.
According to prosecutors, the man received two consecutive life sentences for two counts of willful, deliberate, and premeditated attempted murder. He also received an additional five years for personally causing great bodily injury and using a weapon during the attack.
The investigation found that the man had reportedly become obsessed with the victim after knowing her through online gaming. Authorities said he traveled from Canada to California after allegedly planning the attack for about a month. Prosecutors said he later admitted his intention had been to kill someone.
Rather than arriving openly, investigators said the man allegedly disguised himself as an Amazon delivery driver and carried a package to the home. When the victim’s boyfriend answered the door, the suspect allegedly forced his way inside and attacked him with a knife, causing critical injuries.
Authorities said the victim fought back using a sharp metal object while trying to protect her boyfriend. During the struggle, she was allegedly stabbed and strangled, suffering moderate injuries. Investigators said the suspect also received critical stab wounds during the confrontation.
Detectives later examined the package the suspect had been carrying and found handcuffs, duct tape, and knives inside. Authorities said they were unable to determine exactly how those items were intended to be used.
A second Canadian man was later arrested in connection with the case after investigators determined he had allegedly known about the planned attack and acted as an accomplice. He later pleaded guilty to assault and being an accessory after the fact to a felony before testifying against the primary defendant.
The primary suspect was convicted earlier this year before receiving his sentence last week.
