Woman Accused of Stranding Elderly Man in Extreme Heat

A Kentucky woman was accused of leaving a 91-year-old man stranded inside a disabled vehicle during extreme heat after an argument reportedly began over cigarettes.

According to the authorities, a passerby called 911 after noticing the elderly alleged victim sitting inside a vehicle that had been left in the roadway while the heat index reached about 101 degrees. Deputies responded and found the man still inside the disabled vehicle.

The alleged victim reportedly told investigators that the woman removed the keys from the ignition before walking away toward a nearby home after he refused to buy her cigarettes. Without the keys, he was unable to move the vehicle or leave the area.

After speaking with the alleged victim, the authorities went to a nearby residence where they believed the woman was staying. Investigators reportedly confirmed she was inside the home, but they said she refused several requests to come outside. Deputies also learned she had outstanding bench warrants.

According to investigators, deputies eventually entered the residence and found the woman hiding in a bedroom. While attempting to take her into custody, the authorities alleged that she struck one of the deputies. Investigators also said she appeared to be under the influence because she allegedly had slurred speech, glassy and bloodshot eyes, and was unsteady on her feet.

The 37-year-old woman was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment, theft by unlawful taking, third-degree assault on a police officer, and menacing.

Authorities also served her with two outstanding bench warrants that were issued after she allegedly failed to appear in court in unrelated cases involving child support, public intoxication, and contempt of court.

She was booked into the county correctional center, where she was held on a $10,000 cash-only bond related to the new charges.
