An Indiana woman was arrested for allegedly allowing a 12-year-old to drive her and two youngsters around town in the early morning hours after she visited a local bar.
Early in the morning on March 4, a 26-year-old woman from Evansville was hanging out at Rick’s Sports Bar where she reportedly drank alcohol. Around 1:00 AM, the woman departed the premises in a vehicle and allegedly picked up three children.
According to reports, the woman allowed the 12-year-old youngster to drive the vehicle while she and the other children rode as passengers. They allegedly cruised around town and towards the waterfront area before heading home.
Before they got back, the woman’s brother-in-law noticed the children were gone, and he called the police to report that his sister-in-law, who lives with him, was drunk with the youngsters in her vehicle. Officers from the Evansville Police Department went to the apartment complex to investigate, and they found the woman at the scene when they arrived.
It was reported that when the officers discussed the claims her brother-in-law made against her, the woman told them she did not know she had done anything wrong. She reportedly denied being intoxicated and informed the officers that she only had one cocktail when she was at the bar.
When she talked to them about the children being in the vehicle, the woman reportedly said she had been teaching the 12-year-old how to drive, so she allowed him to get behind the wheel. She also allegedly said she did not know it was illegal for a child that age to drive a vehicle.
When they arrested her, the woman reportedly struggled and fell, causing her head to bleed.
The woman was transported and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. She is facing preliminary charges of three counts of child neglect, plus one count each of disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement, and criminal recklessness.
