A former Kentucky high school teacher was arrested after the authorities allegedly learned that she engaged in sexual acts with a former underage student.
27-year-old Mollie Verkamp lives in Florence and used to teach at the high school in the Walton-Verona Independent School District.
According to the authorities, in May 2019, the school district reported Verkamp and accused her of sharing texts and videos with sexual content with an 18-year-old student while she was employed at the high school.
During the investigation, the authorities reported that while discussing the allegations regarding the shared content with her former student, Verkamp disclosed that she worked for 2-years at Grant County High School where she allegedly had a similar connection with a 17-year-old.
Verkamp, who reportedly confirmed that she knew the student’s age during the alleged encounters, was said to have informed the investigators that she and the young man had escalated their relationship to the point that they became physically intimate.
The alleged sexual encounters were reported as taking place at Verkamp’s residence.
The Boone County Sheriff’s Office reported in a statement on their website that they do not believe Verkamp was working for any schools during the period of their investigation in 2019-2020. They additionally reported that they believe Verkamp was a yoga instructor in 2019.
Verkamp was taken into custody on July 9, and she was booked into the Boone County Detention Center until she paid 10% of a $10,000 bond.
At her indictment, Verkamp was charged with felony third-degree rape, and felony third-degree sodomy.
The school district reported that they performed extensive background checks on Verkamp before she was hired, and they did not find anything in her references to cause the belief that she was not a good candidate for the position.
