32-year-old Jeffrey Jose Marcano has been employed with the Miami Police Department for eight years.
According to the authorities, on August 20, the Miami Police Department Anti-Corruption Unit began an investigation after someone reported that they believed Marcano was involved in “possible wrongdoing.”
That evening, Marcano was being watched by agents when he reportedly drove a marked Miami police car to the D-Dog House restaurant in the Brickell area of Miami.
The officers reported that they watched as Marcano drank several beers while hanging out with a group of people outside of the restaurant.
It was reported that the officers saw Marcano walk away from the establishment and in the direction of the police car. They said it appeared as if Marcano was having a tough time steadying himself on his feet.
He allegedly climbed into the car and tried to start the engine when the officers intercepted Marcano and reportedly prevented him from driving the vehicle.
When interacting with Marcano, the officers reported that he smelled like alcohol and showed indications of drunkenness.
He reportedly consented to a roadside sobriety test, but he performed poorly. His BAC was reported as .034, which is more than triple the legal limit.
While standing near the police vehicle, Marcano allegedly fumbled with his pocket causing two plastic bags to fall out. It was asserted that cocaine was in the baggies.
Marcano was taken into custody and booked into the Miami-Dade jail. He may be charged with driving under the influence, and possession of cocaine.
He was released later that day after posting bond, and Marcano apologized to his family for the situation.
The Miami Police Department reported that Marcano has been suspended without pay while the incident is investigated.
