A Florida woman and her juvenile daughter were stopped by the authorities after an investigation into the alleged theft of more than $2,000 worth of merchandise from a Disney collectibles store in Orlando.
According to investigators, the pair had recently left a store that specializes in Disney trading pins when employees reported suspicious activity. The collectible pins feature Disney characters, attractions, and special events and are popular among guests who trade them with other collectors.
After locating the pair, deputies reportedly found a large amount of merchandise in their possession. Investigators said the juvenile was carrying most of the items, which had an estimated value of more than $2,000. The woman was allegedly found with several additional items worth about $40.
The authorities said the woman later spoke with investigators after being advised of her rights. According to the arrest affidavit, she allegedly admitted that she knew her daughter was taking merchandise from the store without paying. Investigators said she told them her daughter did not have enough money to purchase the items.
The investigation also included text messages that were allegedly exchanged between the woman and her daughter around the time of the incident. According to the affidavit, the messages suggested the girl should hurry and return to the vehicle so they could leave before attracting attention. Investigators said the woman voluntarily showed the messages to deputies.
Store employees also described what they allegedly witnessed inside the business. One employee told the authorities that the juvenile appeared to leave with about 15 collectible pins, while another estimated the number was closer to 40. Employees further alleged that the woman asked a worker for a shopping bag while the juvenile was gathering merchandise. Investigators said witnesses believed the request may have been intended to divert attention away from the girl’s actions.
The woman was later arrested and charged with grand theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Court records showed that she pleaded not guilty to the charges.
