A Tennessee woman was charged after the authorities said a co-worker suffered serious burns when boiling water was allegedly thrown on him during an incident at a fast-food restaurant.
The incident happened on July 18 at a Taco Bell in Memphis. According to investigators, the victim sustained second-degree burns to his arms, legs, groin, and stomach after the hot water was thrown on him. He later underwent surgery to treat his injuries.
Police said the victim told them he and the woman had been joking around before the situation suddenly escalated. He allegedly admitted that he had hidden her work iPad as a prank after she threw away his shirt but said he did not believe she would act on a threat to burn him.
The woman, however, gave a different account of what happened. She allegedly told reporters the victim had been making inappropriate comments toward her, repeatedly entered her personal space, and refused to return the iPad after she asked him several times. She claimed she eventually “blanked out” before throwing the boiling water on him.
According to the authorities, the woman went to the back of the restaurant, obtained a pot of boiling water, and threw it on the victim before leaving the business. Officers later interviewed witnesses and gathered evidence before identifying her as the suspect.
The victim suffered burns severe enough that portions of his skin came off, and he said his recovery would take time following surgery.
Following the investigation, the woman was arrested and charged with aggravated assault. Court records indicate she was also ordered to complete anger management classes. She was later released after posting a $5,000 bond.
