A Georgia woman with Alzheimer’s was arrested and jailed for domestic violence after she accidentally scratched her daughter while in a confused state.
69-year-old Annie Reynolds lives in Riverdale. She has Alzheimer’s, and her daughter Pamela is her caregiver.
On the afternoon of July 1, Reynolds walked out of her home by herself, and her daughter found her walking in the direction of a busy intersection.
The Clayton County Police were notified, and officers were sent to the location to assist.
It was reported that Pamela found Reynolds in a state of confusion before the authorities arrived.
When Pamela was trying to interact with her, she reported that Reynolds appeared to be bewildered and afraid. Reynolds reportedly swiped at her daughter and left visible scratches on her arms.
The police arrived, and they saw the red marks on Pamela’s arm.
Pamela tried to explain that she is Reynolds’ caregiver and that her mother has Alzheimer’s. She told them that her mom did not belong in jail.
The authorities informed Pamela that they were required to make an arrest when any physical violence was involved in an incident.
The police offered to take Reynolds to the hospital for treatment instead, but the woman declined.
Reynolds was placed under arrest and booked into the Clayton County Jail on suspicion of one count of battery, family violence.
Pamela, who said she is very familiar with the way her mother’s condition leaves her confused at times, has insisted that she will not press charges against her.
Her daughter has been trying to arrange for her bond, but Reynolds is prohibited from having contact with her since she is the alleged victim. The fact that she has no intention of pressing charges, and that she is her mother’s caregiver has not been considered relevant to the criminal matter at this point.
