A Florida man accused of attempting to murder his ex-girlfriend with a gun reportedly yelled out declarations of love while being detained by deputies.
39-year-old Aaron James Thayer reportedly works in Connecticut since 2002, but he had a long-term relationship with a woman in Flagler County, Florida. The pair first united when the woman was 13-years-old, and they have a young daughter.
According to his girlfriend, for the previous few months, the couple has not been getting along. The woman reported that things had always been toxic between the pair and that Thayer had become physically abusive after she turned 18. They recently reportedly ended the relationship.
On the afternoon of April 2, the woman called the authorities and expressed fear for her life because of text messages Thayer allegedly sent her.
When law enforcement with the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office went to her home to take her statement, the woman was outside. She reportedly explained that Thayer could watch her through security cameras in her dwelling, and she did not want him to suspect she called the police.
According to the police report, Thayer kept trying to reach the woman through her cell phone by calling and sending texts. They reported that they read threatening content such as “Hope you die,” and “Imma [SIC] kill you.”
Thayer allegedly had the impression that his ex was cheating on him. The woman purported that this assumption was the cause of his alleged anger.
The police were concerned that Thayer might be en route to the location, and they said they could bring the woman to a safe place. She said she did not want to leave home, so the police kept watch over her residence in case Thayer showed up.
The authorities tried to use Thayer’s cell phone to track him, and they reported it showed him traveling south until they lost connection with the device.
Just before 3:30 pm the following day, the woman called the police and told them Thayer was at her home and trying to break in.
The call was disconnected, but the woman called back from outside and said Thayer had gotten in the home. She alleged that he retrieved a gun she keeps in a drawer in her bedroom and loaded the weapon.
Thayer reportedly put the gun in the waist of his pants and tried to talk to the alleged victim before fleeing with the weapon, and $400 of the woman’s cash.
The police intercepted Thayer as he was running down the road, and they reportedly told him to get on the ground.
Thayer allegedly resisted and tried to reason with the authorities until they used a taser and handcuffed him.
When speaking with the police, Thayer said that he thought the alleged victim had a man at the home, and he only got the firearm in case he needed it for protection from the unknown party. He reportedly saw an officer on one of the cameras the previous day, and he believed that it was the woman’s love interest. He additionally added that he would never hurt the woman or the children, nor would he harm an officer of the law.
Thayer was taken into custody, and he is facing charges for suspicion of attempted murder, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, resisting an officer without violence, petit theft, and making written threats to kill or injure.
