A teaching assistant at a high school in South Carolina was arrested after he was accused of tainting the air in the building, causing students and staff to feel ill and damaging the air conditioning system.

While it is not uncommon for kids to say “school stinks” in a metaphorical context to express their displeasure, at the end of August, West Florence High School in Florence experienced a situation involving a literal interpretation of the phrase. It was reported that on the last Monday in August, a noxious smell began permeating throughout the corridors and classrooms. The odor did not dissipate, and several students and employees reported that they started feeling sick. In an attempt to determine the cause of the issue, the air conditioning system was inspected by professionals, but they did not believe it was the source of the odor.

The authorities were notified, and during their investigation, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office learned that the malodorous situation started on August 25 and continued until September 19. When trying to pinpoint the culprit, they were led to a 32-year-old teaching assistant. They believed the man ordered fart spray online and had been spraying it inside the school with enough regularity to cause it to linger.
