A man is facing felony charges after the son of an 88-year-old woman reported that he watched on webcam as the employee sexually violate his mother in her residential senior care facility.
52-year-old Olabamidele Bewaji is an employee at The Pillars of Mankato Senior and Assisted Living Facility in Minnesota.
An 83-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s resides in one of the apartments on the premises. Her son reported that her room contains several live video streaming cameras to keep an eye on her well-being as needed.
On March 8, one of the cameras in his mom’s apartment sent the man a notification.
Her son became concerned and quickly checked the footage to see what triggered the alert.
He allegedly saw a man identified as Bewaji in his mother’s residence.
Bewaji reportedly approached the woman and removed her clothing. When she was undressed, the man allegedly climbed on top of her and had sexual relations with her.
Upon viewing the alleged sexual assault, the woman’s son activated the microphone feature on the camera device and made it known that he was watching. He ordered Bewaji to stop touching the woman.
Bewaji reportedly complied with her son’s orders and left the woman’s residence.
The Mankato Department of Public Safety was notified, and officers were sent to the facility.
According to the police report, the woman is mentally incapacitated and physically handicapped.
When speaking to the alleged victim, an officer noted that she said she did not recall the incident.
When the authorities tracked down Bewaji, he was questioned at the Blue Earth County Justice Center. The man was allegedly open to discussing the incident without legal counsel.
Bewaji initially reportedly said he did not sexually assault the woman.
After talking with the police and learning their intentions to go forward with the investigation he allegedly said he had physical intimate relations with her because she desired it.
Bewaji was detained and charged with two counts of sexually abusing a helpless and/or mentally impaired victim.
If he is convicted and sentenced to the maximum penalty, Bewaji could spend 15 years in prison and/or have to pay a $30,000 fine for each count.
