An elderly Florida man is facing serious charges after allegedly trying to kill his wife so she would not be alone after he committed suicide.

On October 26, a 93-year-old man and his wife of 60 years were at their home in Ocala. It was reported that he suffers from chronic debilitating pain, and on that day like many other occasions, he mentioned to his wife that he wanted to end his life. He became concerned that if he followed through, he would be leaving her by herself. He reportedly retrieved a rope and snuck up behind her while she was watching television. Before she realized what was happening, the man allegedly put it around her neck and began choking her with it, but she was able to break free and call the authorities for help.

Deputies with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office went to the address to investigate, and the woman was outside when they arrived. She explained what happened, and the deputies took note of the marks on her throat. Her husband was in the house, and when he talked to the deputies, he reportedly told them he was going to use the rope to kill his wife before using it to kill himself. The man and woman both told the deputies that he attempted to smother her two weeks before the recent incident.

Anaheim police Sgt. Darin Wyatt said that the police were called to the Friendly Village mobile home park on La Palma Ave. after a report of domestic violence. But, before the police had arrived, the suspect, a man in his 30’s, fled saying he wasn’t going to go quietly and threatening “suicide by cop.”

According to Sgt. Wyatt the police set up a perimeter around the mobile home park to search for him. The people in the area were warned to shelter in place because it was unknown if the man was armed.

Anaheim’s city police helicopter was sent in, to provide a spotlight and aerial surveillance. Soon after the police in the helicopter spotted a man fitting the suspect’s description hiding in the bushes around the search area. Officers were sent to that location and arrested the suspect “without incident,” Wyatt said.
