A man in Pinellas County pleaded guilty to a pair of misdemeanor charges after quarreling with police officers over his rights when he was found naked and sitting in a sidewalk garbage can.
Just before midnight on April 6, a 35-year-old man without permanent housing was hanging out in the downtown section of St. Petersburg. It was reported that even though he was arrested for similar behavior in the summer of 2011, he was quite intoxicated, and began to remove his clothing in view of the public.
In addition to shedding his garments, the man called attention to himself when he climbed inside a garbage can that was sitting on the sidewalk. Officers from the St. Petersburg Police Department learned about the situation, and they approached the man.
According to reports, when they interacted with him, the police said the man was still nude. He also smelled like alcohol and showed several signs of intoxication, such as having trouble with balance while standing after he was removed from the trash receptacle.
It was reported that when asked his name, the man refused to provide any personal details. He also allegedly fought for his right to be naked in a trash can in public.
The purportedly stinky suspect was taken into custody and booked into the Pinellas County Jail for one misdemeanor count of disorderly intoxication – disturbance, and one misdemeanor count of resisting an officer without violence – obstruction. His jail record reflects that he was released a few hours after his arrest for time served. On April 8, the man went to court and pleaded guilty to the charges, and the judge ordered him to pay a fine of $520.
