A man who was committed to a sex offender treatment facility nearly fifteen years ago was caught in another state after reportedly escaping by putting his ankle monitor on a dummy he left in his bed.

On May 15, an inpatient at the Minnesota Sex Offender Treatment Program campus in St. Peter reportedly used a gimmick to trick the staff so he could leave the facility without being detected. According to reports, the person, later identified as a man who was committed to the center in 2011, was required to wear a GPS ankle monitor. He was able to take it off, and he allegedly attached it to a dummy that he left in his bed in a purported effort to trick the staff into thinking he was asleep. After setting up the dummy, the man reportedly slipped out the door and began an eventful multi-state journey ending at his mom’s house in Webb City, Missouri.

A while later, the staff found the dummy in his bed after his roommate told them he did not get out of bed at all that day. The following evening, the authorities were notified about the situation, and an investigation was opened. Using his phone records, they reported that they believed he met a man in a laundry mat who agreed to drive him to Albert Lea, and they spent a bit of time at a casino in Utah before parting ways. The suspected escapee allegedly bought a car, and he was found at his mother’s house after it was reported as being spotted in Missouri.
